Return Roller Maintenance for Dirty Conveyor Lines

Jun 04, 2026

The return side of a conveyor is easy to ignore because it does not carry fresh material. But this lower belt still brings back dust, small stones, water, and sticky fines. When return rollers stop turning smoothly, the belt can rub against the roller shell and create a flat spot. This causes noise, heat, and faster belt wear.

Regular inspection should focus on bearing sound, roller surface build-up, shaft end movement, and the belt line under the conveyor. In sticky material areas, rubber disc return rollers or spiral return rollers can help reduce build-up on the belt. Workers should also clear dropped material under the return section, because buried rollers fail faster. A simple record of roller position and replacement date is useful for large conveyor lines. It helps the site know which area has the most wear and which roller type works better.
